To the editor:
I think Bob Sacco's drawing of two greyhounds talking about the Iditarod is heartbreaking. It is a sad day for the racing greyhounds in Massachusetts. Racing greyhounds in the state of Massachusetts were protected by law that if they were adoptable after their racing career, they would be. And they were!
Now there is an overload of adoptable greyhounds. The folks that voted them out of a job, aren't lining up to adopt them. Where does that leave the unwanted ex-racers?
The groups that spearheaded the ban on greyhound racing don't have a great track record! Grey2kusa started this ballot question back in 2000, yet their group doesn't/nor ever has had anything to do with adopting out greyhounds.
The HSUS, which also backed the ban to end greyhound racing in our state, doesn't adopt out ex-racers either. These groups will give you a link to sites that do adopt out dogs, but they themselves don't.
The MSPCA also backed this ban on greyhound racing, yet their group puts down hundreds of unwanted dogs yearly. Sad to say some of those dogs maybe greyhounds in 2010!
This is just the doggie dog side of this vote. Here's the human side . . . people who work with animals 24/7 do it because of their love of animals. Anyone who has a dog/horse/pet knows the care that goes into the upkeep of an animal.
Think about how you would feel if someone accused and convicted you on hearsay. It's a sure bet that you'd want your side heard or at least viewed by the naysayers.
Grey2kusa ran their campaign saying, "save the dogs.” They also stated that their group would retrain ex-greyhound workers into the work force. Needless to say they did neither.
They did, however, raise many dollars from goodhearted folks who thought they were saving dogs. The bottom line is . . . no dogs were saved and many jobs were lost.
Greyt Job!
