    Track's signal could be broadcast
Goal is to boost betting on live races at Dubuque Greyhound Park.
Pending approval from the state, the signal from Dubuque Greyhound Park will be sent out to locations around the country during this racing season.

The goal, according to Brian Carpenter, is to increase money in the pools and spark more live betting on Dubuque races.

Carpenter is the director of racing at the Greyhound Park and Mystique Casino.

He said the Iowa Greyhound Association and Dubuque Greyhound Park at Mystique are splitting the cost of sending out the signal -- a $200,000 annual expense.

A five-year contract has been established for broadcasting the signal, but Carpenter said it includes an exit clause after the first year if it doesn't go well.

"Hopefully, things will go great and we can keep it for five years," he said.

The signal is set to go out to about 25 tracks, Internet sites and off-track betting sites in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oregon and possibly Texas.

Carpenter has been calling locations to gauge interest in carrying the signal and said he is open to sending the signal to "anybody that will take us."

Each Advertisementlocation has to be approved by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

Carpenter anticipates approval of the sites lined up so far following the monthly meeting April 14.

The racing season in Dubuque starts April 30, with a matinee at 1 p.m. and evening races at 7 p.m.

Broadcasting the signal is a first for the Dubuque Greyhound Park, according to Carpenter.

As Dubuque is one of the "top tracks in the country," Carpenter believes broadcasting the local signal will help increase the money in the pools and in live betting.
