DUBUQUE, Iowa – O Ya Katt Daddy show spunk and grit in taking the $30,000 Future Star Stakes at the Iowa Greyhound Park on Saturday, Sept. 26.

“In the kennel (when he was growing up),” owner Gary Reicherts remembered, “he was more active and had more muscle. You noticed him.”

The 76-pounder, born Sept. 16, 2013 out of Djays Octane- O Ya Cranberry, was “the best,” Superior Kennel owner Alan Hill said “of our six” greyhounds the kennel had qualified for the championship race.

Given those odds the kennel should have felt in good shape as the greyhounds were walked to the boxes for the 5-16 mile test.

However “we had concerns,” Hill admitted. “We didn’t get the boxes we wanted for any of the six. And BCS got the seven box.”

Ah, BCS Old Glory, the Boeckenstedt Kennel entry, just happened to come into the final as the leading point earner in the three qualifying rounds.

Still nothing was etched in stone.<{> The patrons did send O Ya Katt Daddy to the boxes as a $2.20 to $1 favorite with BCS Old Glory next at $2.30 to $1.

A big plus came in an instant when Katt Daddy broke on top which was “a lot better than he usually breaks,” Hill explained. As an example, Katt Daddy broke last in the third round qualifying race.

Still, kennelmate Hilco Supersonic broke second and won the rush to the first turn for the early lead.

It was Supersonic who controlled the race as the greyhounds moved around the first turn and through the backstretch. The margin over O Ya Katt Daddy grew to two lengths at points but no more.

As the greyhounds reached the top of the homestretch, the Superior Kennel folks felt they knew what was coming.

:”Katt Daddy was in a good position,” Hill said, “and he does not run short. Supersonic can be short.”

O Ya Katt Daddy slipped outside of the rail-running Supersonic and passed the leader late in the homestretch on the way to a one and a half length victory in a time of 31.06 seconds.

“The sky opened up,” said Reicherts, “when he was close after the first turn. That’s what he needed. When he drew even in the homestretch, he had his chance.”

O Ya Katt Daddy moves to 25-9-5-6 with the title run.

Hilco Supersonic, 20-7-4-3, held on to second.

Six lengths back in third place was Superior’s Classy Wolverine, 12-5-3-2, who “is a strong greyhound,” said Hill.

BCS Old Glory, 26-11-3-5, rallied enough to take fourth, seven lengths behind.

Hilco Tease (Superior), 22-8-1-3, was fifth, eight and a half back.

Pat C Giggles (Collins-Schmidt), 22-6-3-4, left the boxes as the longshot in the field at 16-1. She finished sixth, 10 lengths back.

Hilco Magnum (Superior), 23-11-2-0, out of the same Oct. 7, 2013 litter out of KC And All – Hilco V Star as Hilco Supersonic, was seventh, 11 back. That leaves Super C Malina (Superior), 11-3-3-3, to finish last, 12 lengths back.

Checking the tote board, O Ya Katt Daddy paid $6.40, $5.80 and $3.80; Hilco Supersonic paid $7.80 and $6.80; Classy Wolverine paid $6.80; the 3-5 quiniela paid $37.60; the 3-5-A tri-box paid $61.80 and the 3-5-4-7- 10 cent superfecta paid $265.20.
