DUBUQUE, Iowa - Slatex Elvis was not only in the house Saturday, Oct. 24, for the Secretary’s Choice Stakes, part of the Iowa Greyhound Park’s season finale, Elvis brought down the house with a solid four-length verdict.

The triumph was the icing on the cake for the 70-pounder, born July 30, 2013 out of Kiowa Mon Manny – Slatex Pluto. The win gives Elvis a record of 32-14-7-2 for the 2015 season at IGP, good enough for the track’s win title. Bcs Old Glory missed her shot at tying Elvis a few races later.

“We felt he has been the best sprinter here (at the Iowa Greyhound Park) all year long,” said Jackson Greyhounds trainer Jack Shaver said. “He’s beaten the best here all year.”

Elvis broke on top from the five box, always a plus, but, on the other hand, “having the five,” Shaver pointed out, “didn’t concern us as long as he had room to move.”

Halfway down the frontstretch Slatex Elvis was challenged by Pat C Apollo J (Collins – Schmidt), who broke second from the four box. But Elvis started putting distance between the pair as the field worked its way around the first turn. In the backstretch the lead was a dominating six lengths,

“The only greyhound I was worried about was the six (My Motorsrunnin of the Superior Kennel),” Shaver said. “He has a huge backside. He has caught Elvis on a slower rail track.”

But the rail wasn’t slow and Elvis had no intention of getting caught.

“He ran a great race,” Shaver said.

Pat C Apollo J, 23-4-9-3, could only chase and pick up the second-place money. He finished a half-length ahead of Jd Spark Plug (Stidham), 28-8-6-5, who ran third throughout the race.

My Motorsrunnin, 27-6-7-6, broke last and rallied to take fourth, six and a half lengths back.

A length and a half back in fifth was the longshot in the field, Crv’s Turn Back (Ward), 30-5-3-4, who left the box at 14.50 on the dollar.

Sixth was A Man Named Joe (Copper Kettle), 29-8-2-5, 10 lengths back. Boc’s Recon (Boeckenstedt), 28-7-7-1, nipped Dk’s All In (Hardison), 9-3-0-0, for seventh.

Slatex Elvis rewarded the patrons by paying $5.40, $3.60 and $3.00. Pat C Apollo J paid $5.40 and $4.40. Jd Spark Plug paid $4.80.

    The 4-5 quiniela paid $23.40; the 5-4-3 tri box paid $109.50; the 5-4-3-6 .10 superfecta paid $29.61 and the 1-1-5-5 .10 pick 4 paid $168.38.
