Greyhound Racing $7,500 Iowa Bred Consolation race at IGP

DUBUQUE, Iowa – If there was ever a time when you wanted a greyhound to be able to give a post-race interview, this was the time. That is because Boc’s Dakota Boy did on Saturday, Oct. 24, in the $7,500 Iowa Bred Consolation what every athlete in every sport would want to do.

“You mean,” voiced one veteran observer, “he is running in Grade A and winning a stakes race and you are retiring him?”

Yep, Dakota Boy won the Consolation in his final appearance on the greyhound race track.

“He’s unbelievable,” said Boeckenstedt Kennel trainer Mike Curran. “He’s four and a half years old and he goes to work every day. Now he is going into the adoption program. He deserves a good home.”

The racing granddaddy popped the four box and gave a box-to-wire performance. At one point Dakota Boy led by four lengths.

“When he goes to the front,” Curran said, “that’s his style, there he is tough.”

In the homestretch Boc’s Dakota Boy found himself pressed by kennelmate Boc’s Circleking who was making a charge after breaking fifth.

“Circleking was coming on,” said Curran, “but I was yelling at him to stay back and let Dakota Boy win.”

He did and Boc’s Dakota Boy, set out of the box as a 13-1 longshot, posted a half-length verdict in his final show on the track. He finished 25-5-4-2 for the season.

Boc’s Circleking, 30-5-9-1, easily held second in what proved to be a two greyhound race.

Running third, but seven lengths back, was Oya Infrared (Superior), 28-7-3-4.

Jd Unsung Hero (Stidham), 26-6-3-1, who had challenged early, was fourth, two lengths back of third and just a nose ahead of fifth.

The disappointment was Bcs Old Glory (Boeckenstedt), 32-13-3-7. The favorite had a chance to be the co-leader in wins for the season but fell back early.

“She’s young and she will be a good one,” Curran said. “She wants the outside. She just had bad luck with the draw in getting the one box.”

Improv (Hardison), 25-4-3-2, was sixth, 11 lengths behind while Classy Wolverine (Superior), 17-5-5-3, and Hilco Kalvin (Superior), 17-2-4-3, completed the field

    Boc’s Dakota Boy paid $28.00, $9.40 and $11.80; Boc’s Circleking paid $8.40 and $6.80; Oya Infrared paid $7.00.

The 4-8 quiniela paid $104.60; the 4-8-5 tri box paid $489.30 and the 4-8-5-6 .10 superfecta paid $333.07.
