Greyhound Racing Jerry Cole Trainer of the Year at IGP

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Jerry Cole of the Superior Kennel at the Iowa Greyhound Park found being named the Trainer of the Year a “little bit of a shock. I was not expecting it.”

Looking at the numbers, the award seems to be a no-brainer. The Superior Kennel easily had the best season at IGP in 2015, producing the most victories, by more than 60, than any other kennel.

Cole came to Superior three years ago.

“I found out they were looking for a trainer,” Cole remembered, “and we hit it off during the interview.”

No stranger in the business, Cole has been a trainer for 30 years; this year’s success is understandable.

“You learn a lot everyday,” said Cole. “You try to keep to the same routine every day. There are no real secrets.

“We’ve had some pretty good greyhounds,” said Cole. “That makes your job easier. You have to have good greyhounds to win and we’ve been lucky.”

The run of greyhounds started with Superior Product and Superior Marine, Cole said.

This year nine of the top 20 greyhounds at IGP raced for Superior. Hilco Magnum won 12 times. O Ya Cindra won 11 times. O Ya Katt Daddy won nine times including the $30,000 Future Stars Stakes; Hilco Supersonic won eight times; O Ya Chewie won eight times as did Hilco Tease and Hilco Kc Kidd. Superior Canard and Superior Flash each won seven times. O Ya Lacey won the IGA Maiden Debut.

“I wasn’t expecting that much of Canard,” Cole said, “but he surprised me. He came along and made the final of the ($135,000) Iowa Breeders Cup.”

The other aspect of Superior Kennel is the human side and that is an important part in the season, the Trainer of the Year explained.

“My assistants, Joanna Kups and her mother, Jay, always do a great job,” Cole said.

“Our kennel owners, Alan Hill and Jeff Cole, deserve a lot of credit for getting the greyhounds ready to come to the track.

“All of them make this job easier.”
