Greyhound Racing Iowa Greyhound Park $30,000 future Star Final

DUBUQUE, Iowa – “It has not been the best of summers,” Clayton Black, owner of the Clayton Black Kennel was explaining, “so this win is really special.

“Jason Sartori has been a great partner. Brett and Kathy Entas run a kennel that sparkles. I’m so happy for them.”

The celebration is over the performance given by their greyhound, Monkey Way, in winning the $30,000 Future Star Stakes at the Iowa Greyhound Park on Saturday, September 24. Monkey Way, a 61 pounder, born October 26, 2014 out of Cheeky Monkey – Bow My Way, made the final strides a true celebration as she won pulling away by six lengths.

The triumph was not a given. Monkey Way came out of the three box as the second longest shot, the IGP patrons said, at 24-1.

But turning back a couple of pages, entering Monkey Way made sense.

“We knew she was fast,” said Black, “she and her littermate, Bo Monkey, were our fastest and Bo won a race (at IGP) the day after Monkey Way won the Stakes.”

Monkey Way started the Stakes in Grade C and opened eyes with an impressive eight and a half length win. But cold water fell on hopes with her seventh place finish in the second round.

“She got into traffic,” remembered Kathy Entas, “and she does not like traffic.

“We did our math and felt she needed to finish at least second in the third round to make the final. When she finished third, we thought we did not have enough points.”

But the numbers added up right for the Black Kennel and Monkey Way had her spot in the final.

She drew the three box which was “well, the one (JD Accomplice of Stidham) and the eight (Boc’s Cover Up of Boeckenstedt) got the boxes they wanted,” pointed out Black.

“She likes the inside,” said Kathy Entas, “and then we remembered she won that first round race out of the three.”

Monkey Way broke second out of the three, just behind At’s Frednbarney (T And T), who had the four box, and the pair quickly dueled in the rush to the first turn.

“Having the good break and being inside of the four was the key,” said Black. “If they had flip-flopped those boxes, it could have easily been a different story.”

But it wasn’t. Monkey Key grabbed a two and a half lead rounding the first turn and that was it. The margin was four and a half lengths in the far turn and, as mentioned, six at the wire.

“That’s her game,” said Black. “Once she got the front, she simply out ran them.”

With the triumph, Monkey Way moves to 27-7-3-3 on the 2016 IGP season. Next for the pup is an entry in the track’s Iowa Breeders Cup.

“We will give it a try,” said Black, “but that will be a different story as she will be going up against the older, more experienced greyhounds.”

At’s Frednbarney, the pre-stakes favorite, held firm in finishing second and moved to 24-11-4-3 on the year. Jd Accomplice left the boxes as the favorite and ran a steady third, eight lengths back. She is 13-7-3-2.

The 40-1 longshot in the field, Sh Tomfoolery (Stidham), 14-6-0-2, rallied a bit to take fourth, 10 lengths back.

Boc’s Cover Up, 20-5-8-3, rallied for fifth and Jax Gee Wiz (Jackson), 24-7-7-1, faded a bit for sixth.

    Jt’s Time To Go (T And T), 20-6-4-3, was seventh and a length ahead of Gt’s Conoco (T And T), 24-5-3-4.

For the patrons Monkey Way paid $50.00, $20.80 and $4.40; At’s Frednbarney paid $5.60 and $3.00; Jd Accomplice paid $2.20.

    The 3-4 quiniela paid $102.40; the 3-4-1 tri-box paid $132.80; the 3-4-1-5 .10

    superfecta paid $262.77 and the 8-1-3 $1 pick 3 paid $210.70.

Next up for the Iowa Greyhound Park is the Iowa Breeders Cup. The first of the four qualifying round is set for Saturday, October 1.
